Uniting the States of Matter
The U.S. Federal Phase Department is committed to educating the American people about the phases of matter. This includes detailing the relationship between phases of matter and energy, describing the protocol for standard phase changes, and researching emerging phases to promote national security.
Phases of Matter
Solids

A rigid and tangible phase, solids make up the ground, your computer, and you yourself.
Gases

Gases flow freely through the air, moving faster as internal energy increases.
Liquids

Liquids are fluid but still tangible, and they flow to match their container's shape.
Plasma

When matter reaches 10,000 degrees Kelvin, it ionizes and becomes plasma.
The Fifth Phase

The FPD is investigating the existence of a new phase of matter, known currently to the scientific community as a Bose-Einstein Condensate. It exists at a temperature on the nanokelvin scale between Absolute Zero and the solid phase. BECs are not known to exist naturally, although some speculate that high-pressure atmospheres around neutron stars could contain the conditions necessary for them to exist.
